What Is the TI-30X?
The TI-30X is a family of scientific calculators used in schools for decades. The best known model is the TI-30X IIS, with a two-line display that shows your problem on the top line and the answer on the bottom line. The older TI-30Xa has a one-line display.
Scientific calculators do the math that a basic calculator cannot: fractions, powers, roots, trig, and logs. They do not draw graphs. That is what makes them different from graphing calculators — and it is why many exams allow them.
Students use the TI-30X in middle school and high school for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and science. It is small, cheap, and simple, and it does exactly what a school class needs. Our online tool follows the TI-30X style, so you can practice with the same keys you will use in class.
If you need a textbook-style fraction display, try the TI-30XS MultiView. If you need graphs, use our TI-84 Plus style graphing calculator.
Key Features
The TI-30X style calculator on this page covers the features students use most:
- Fractions. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, and convert answers to decimals.
- Trig. Sine, cosine, and tangent, in degrees or radians.
- Powers and roots. Squares, cubes, square roots, and any power.
- Logs. Common logs and natural logs for algebra and science.
- Statistics. One-variable statistics with mean and standard deviation.
- Constants. Common science constants built in.
- Two-line display. See your problem and your answer at the same time, and scroll back to check your work.
It is a simple tool on purpose. There are no extra menus, so you can learn it in minutes.
How to Use the TI-30X Online
Here is a quick start with a trig problem. Find sin(30°):
- Check the angle mode. Make sure the calculator is in degrees, not radians.
- Press SIN. The display shows sin(.
- Type 30 and close the bracket. Enter 30).
- Press Enter. The answer is 0.5.
- Scroll back. Use the arrow keys to see your problem and answer together on the two-line display.
For a fraction, type the top number, press the fraction key, and type the bottom number. For a power, type the base, press the power key, and type the exponent. Our how-to guide has more worked examples.
TI-30X vs Other Models
The TI-30X family has several models. This table shows how they compare:
| Model | Type | Display | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| TI-30X IIS | Scientific | Two-line | School math, simple and cheap |
| TI-30Xa | Scientific | One-line | Basic school math |
| TI-30XS MultiView | Scientific | MultiView, 4 lines | Fractions shown as in a textbook |
| TI-34 MultiView | Scientific | MultiView, 4 lines | Middle school math |
| TI-84 Plus | Graphing | Graph screen | Algebra, calculus, statistics |
If your teacher asked for a TI-30X, the TI-30X IIS is the model they mean. If you want fractions to look like a textbook, the TI-30XS is the better pick.
Who Uses the TI-30X?
Middle school and high school students use the TI-30X for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and science. It is often the first scientific calculator a student owns, because it costs little and lasts for years.
Teachers like it because every student can have the same calculator, and the keys are the same for the whole class. Many exam boards allow it, so students can use the same calculator in class and in the test room.
If you are moving up to graphing, try the TI-84 Plus next — the fraction and trig keys work the same way, so you will already know half the calculator.

The TI-30X IIS has a two-line display. The TI-30XS MultiView has a four-line display that shows fractions and roots the way they look in a textbook. Both are scientific calculators with the same kinds of functions.
No. This is a TI-30X style scientific calculator made by GraphingCalculator.dev. It is not a Texas Instruments product, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Texas Instruments.
Yes, in most cases. The TI-30X is a scientific calculator without a CAS and without graphing, so it is allowed on the ACT, the SAT, AP exams, and many state tests. Always check the current rules for your test.
No. The TI-30X is a scientific calculator, not a graphing calculator. For graphs, use our TI-84 Plus style graphing calculator.
