What Is the TI-30XS?
The TI-30XS MultiView is a scientific calculator, not a graphing calculator. It came out in 2007, and it is the most common scientific calculator in US schools. Its special feature is the MultiView display: it shows fractions, square roots, and powers the way they look in a textbook, not as a single flat line.
The display shows up to four lines at once. You can scroll back through your work and see each step, instead of only the last answer. That makes it much easier to spot a mistake.
Students use the TI-30XS in middle school and high school for pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and science. It is also allowed on many exams, including the ACT, the SAT, and AP tests — check your test rules first.
If you need graphs, use our TI-84 Plus style graphing calculator instead. The TI-30XS does not draw graphs — it is built for fast, exact scientific math.
Key Features
The TI-30XS style calculator on this page covers the features students use most:
- MultiView display. Fractions, roots, and powers appear as they look in a textbook.
- Fractions. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, and switch between fraction and decimal answers.
- Powers and roots. Squares, cubes, square roots, and any power or root.
- Scientific notation. Enter and read very large and very small numbers with ease.
- Table of values. Build a table for one function and read its values step by step.
- Statistics. One-variable and two-variable statistics with lists.
- Probability. Factorials, combinations, permutations, and random numbers.
- Constants and conversions. Common constants and unit conversions built in.
How to Use the TI-30XS Online
The TI-30XS is easy to learn because the keys match the math symbols. Try adding fractions:
- Enter the first fraction. Type 3/4 using the fraction key.
- Press + and enter the second fraction. Type 1/2.
- Press Enter. The answer appears as 5/4.
- Switch to a decimal. Press the fraction-to-decimal key to see 1.25.
- Scroll back. Use the arrow keys to see your earlier steps on the MultiView display.
For a power, type the base, press the power key, and type the exponent. For a square root, press the root key first, then the number.
Worked Examples
Here are three problems students solve every day on the TI-30XS:
Fractions: 3/4 + 1/2
Enter 3/4 + 1/2 and press Enter. The answer is 5/4 — or 1.25 as a decimal. The fraction form is exact, which is what most teachers want to see.
Scientific notation: 6.02 × 10²³
Enter 6.02, press the EE key, and type 23. The display shows 6.02×10²³. This is how chemistry and physics problems write very large numbers.
Powers: 2³ × 2⁴
Enter 2^3 × 2^4 and press Enter. The answer is 128. Check it by hand: 8 × 16 = 128.
TI-30XS vs Other Models
The TI-30XS is one of several scientific calculators. This table shows how they compare:
| Model | Type | Display | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| TI-30XS MultiView | Scientific | MultiView, 4 lines | School math, fractions, exams |
| TI-30X IIS | Scientific | Two-line | School math, simple and cheap |
| TI-34 MultiView | Scientific | MultiView, 4 lines | Middle school math |
| TI-84 Plus | Graphing | Graph screen | Algebra, calculus, statistics |
If your class needs graphs, you need a graphing calculator like the TI-84 Plus. If your class needs fractions and exact answers, the TI-30XS is the right tool.
Is the TI-30XS Allowed on Exams?
Yes, in most cases. The TI-30XS is allowed on the ACT, the SAT, and AP exams, because it is a scientific calculator without a CAS or a graph screen. Many state tests allow it too.
Rules change, so check the current rules for your test before test day. The TI-30XS has no QWERTY keyboard and no internet access, which is why it is allowed so widely.
Practice with the same calculator you will use in the test. Use this page for fractions, powers, and statistics until the keys feel natural.
