What Is the TI-84 Plus CE?

The TI-84 Plus CE is the color-screen model of the TI-84 family. It is the calculator most schools buy today. It has a bright color display, a thinner body, and a faster processor than the older black-and-white models.

Color makes a real difference. Each function can have its own color, so you can graph three functions at once and still tell them apart. A teacher can point at "the blue curve" and the whole class knows which one it is. For statistics, different data sets get different colors too.

The keys and the steps are mostly the same as the older TI-84. If you know one, you know the other. That is why our online version follows the same layout — what you learn here works on the device in your school bag.

How to Use the TI-84 Plus CE Online

  1. Press Y= and type your function. Pick a color for each function so you can tell them apart.
  2. Press GRAPH. The curve appears in color. Use ZOOM to fit the graph to your screen.
  3. Press TRACE. Move along the curve with the arrow keys. The screen shows the x and y values of each point.
  4. Press TABLE. See a table of values for each function, side by side, in the same colors.

To find a root, an intersection, or a maximum, open the CALC menu. Pick the tool you need and follow the prompts. These are the same steps as on the physical calculator.

If you want the classic black-and-white layout instead, use the TI-84 calculator online. It works the same way, with the same keys.

What Can You Do With It?

  • Graph in color — up to ten functions, each in its own color, on one screen.
  • Solve equations — find roots, intersections, maximums, and minimums with the CALC menu.
  • Make tables — compare values of several functions side by side.
  • Do statistics — enter lists of data, run statistics, and find a regression line.
  • Work with matrices and finance — the same tools as the physical model, for algebra and business math.
  • Graph in 3D and polar form — switch to the 3D graphing calculator or the polar graphing calculator when the problem needs it.

TI-84 Plus CE vs the Older TI-84

TI-84 Plus CE Older TI-84
Screen Color, high resolution Black and white
Body Thinner and lighter Thicker
Speed Faster graphs Slower
Keys and steps Mostly the same Mostly the same
Price Often $100 or more Often $100 or more

Both models do the same math. The Plus CE is easier to read because of color. Our online version is free, so you can try the color layout without buying the device. If you want to practice the keys first, the graphing calculator simulator is a good place to start.
