What Is a TI-84 Style Calculator?
The TI-84 is the graphing calculator most American schools use. It has been in classrooms for many years, so teachers know it well and students learn on it from algebra to calculus. Our tool copies that style: the same key layout, the same steps, and the same screens — in a free online form.
A TI-84 style calculator does more than a basic calculator. It draws graphs, makes tables of values, finds roots and intersections, and runs statistics. You can graph several functions at once and compare them on one screen.
This online version is made for students who do not own the device. Maybe your school has only a few calculators to share. Maybe you left yours at home. Maybe you just want to check one answer fast. Open this page and you have the same tool, for free.
How to Use the TI-84 Calculator Online
Graphing a function takes four steps:
- Press Y= and type your function. For example, type y = x² − 3x + 2. You can type up to ten functions at once.
- Press GRAPH. The curve appears on the screen. If you cannot see it, press ZOOM and pick "Zoom Standard" or "Zoom Fit".
- Press TRACE. Use the arrow keys to move along the curve. The screen shows the x and y values of the point you are on.
- Press TABLE. The table lists x and y values side by side. It is the fastest way to check exact numbers.
To find where a graph crosses the x-axis, use the CALC menu and pick "zero". To find where two graphs meet, graph both and pick "intersect". These are the same steps you use on the physical calculator, so practice here counts in class too.
If you want more practice with the keys, try the full graphing calculator simulator. It works the same way and is made for learning the layout.
What Can You Do With It?
- Graph functions — lines, parabolas, circles, sine and cosine waves, exponential and logarithmic curves.
- Solve equations — find roots, intersections, and the maximum or minimum of a curve.
- Make tables — see x and y values in a clean table, with a step size you pick.
- Do statistics — enter a list of numbers and find the mean, median, and regression line.
- Work with matrices — enter a matrix and find its inverse or determinant.
- Graph in 3D and polar form — switch to the 3D graphing calculator or the polar graphing calculator for those problems.
For single functions, the function graphing calculator is even faster — type and graph in one step.
TI-84 Style Online vs a Real TI-84
| This online calculator | Physical TI-84 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Often $100 or more |
| Screen | Full color, any size | Small screen |
| Needs | A browser and internet | Batteries |
| Allowed on tests | Check the test rules | Usually yes |
The online tool is best for homework, study, and class demos. For a timed test, use the calculator your teacher allows. If your class uses the color model, try the TI-84 Plus CE calculator online — it matches that screen.

The layout follows the real TI-84, so classroom instructions carry over. Yellow labels above a key are its 2ND function; green labels are ALPHA letters.
| Key | What it does here |
|---|---|
| Y= | Enter up to ten functions to graph. |
| WINDOW | Set Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, Ymax and scale. 2ND + WINDOW opens TBLSET for the table. |
| ZOOM | ZBOX, Zoom In/Out, ZDecimal, ZSquare, ZStandard and ZTrig. |
| TRACE | Move along a curve with the arrow keys and read X and Y. 2ND + TRACE opens CALC. |
| GRAPH | Draw the graph. 2ND + GRAPH shows the table of values. |
| MODE | Switch degrees and radians. 2ND + MODE quits back to the home screen. |
| STAT | Enter lists, run 1-Var Stats, 2-Var Stats and LinReg(ax+b). |
Common TI-84 Tasks You Can Do Here
- Find where a graph crosses the x-axis: graph it, press 2ND + TRACE, choose 2:ZERO, then set a left and right bound.
- Find a minimum or maximum: use 3:MINIMUM or 4:MAXIMUM in the same CALC menu.
- Find where two graphs meet: enter both in Y=, then use 5:INTERSECT.
- Read exact values: use 1:VALUE or open the table with 2ND + GRAPH.
- Fit a line to data: type your lists in STAT, then choose LinReg(ax+b).
- Fix a bad window: press ZOOM and choose 6:ZStandard, then adjust WINDOW.

Using TI-83 Instructions on This Calculator
If your class notes are written for the TI-83 or TI-83 Plus, they will mostly work here. Y=, WINDOW, ZOOM, TRACE, GRAPH, the CALC menu and the table use the same key sequences. Menus that exist only on newer models may differ, so follow the on-screen labels.
TI-84 Plus Calculator Online: Is It the Same Thing?
Yes, for everyday graphing. The TI-84 Plus is the original black-and-white model, and the TI-84 Plus CE is the newer color version with a thinner body and a rechargeable battery. They share the same key layout and menus, so the steps on this page work for both. If you want the colorful screen, open the TI-84 Plus CE calculator online; to compare the two models, read TI-84 vs TI-84 Plus CE.
